Joanna Faivre: The Makeup Artist Redefining Beauty In Los Angeles and Paris
Bello: Joanna, you’ve built a career as a makeup artist working in both Los Angeles and Paris. How did your journey in makeup artistry begin?
Joanna: My journey began in Paris, a city that lives and breathes art and fashion. Growing up, I was always drawn to creative expression, and makeup became my medium to bring that passion to life. Starting my career in Paris gave me a deep appreciation for sophistication and artistry, which shaped the foundation of my work.
Bello: You’ve worked on editorials and with A-list clients. How did you break into this exclusive world?
Joanna: It’s a combination of persistence, networking, and always striving for excellence in my craft. Paris introduced me to the world of high fashion and editorial work, where attention to detail is everything. When I transitioned to Los Angeles, I built on that experience, cultivating relationships and delivering consistent, high-quality work that clients could trust.
Bello: What’s the difference between working on editorials versus with celebrity clients?
Joanna: Editorial work is about pushing boundaries and creating artistic looks that tell a story—it’s a collaborative process with photographers, stylists, and creative directors. With celebrity clients, it’s more personal; the goal is to enhance their natural beauty while meeting the demands of high-pressure events, red carpets, or photoshoots. Both are rewarding in their own way.
Bello: How do you prepare for working with high-profile clients?
Joanna: Preparation is key. I make sure to understand their preferences, the occasion, and the image they want to portray. Communication and professionalism are essential. I also ensure my kit is tailored to their needs, and I stay adaptable because things can change quickly in this world.
Bello: What’s been one of the highlights of your career so far?
Joanna: One of the most exciting moments was working on a Vogue Arabia magazine shoot with a client who is now a dear friend of mine, Haya Maraka. It was a surreal experience seeing my work on newsstands worldwide. Moments like that remind me why I love what I do.
Bello: How do you stay inspired and continue evolving in your craft?
Joanna: I’m constantly inspired by art, fashion, and the incredible teams I collaborate with. Attending industry events, learning new techniques, and experimenting with different textures and colors keep my work fresh. I also look at my clients as muses—they inspire me to create looks that feel authentic to them while showcasing my artistry.
Bello: Working in two iconic cities like Los Angeles and Paris must come with challenges. How do you manage them?
Joanna: Balancing two different markets can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Each city has its own pace and style. Paris demands elegance and refinement, while Los Angeles is all about individuality and trendsetting. Staying adaptable and true to my vision has helped me navigate both worlds successfully.
Bello: What advice would you give to makeup artists aspiring to work with celebrities or break into the editorial world?
Joanna: Build a strong portfolio that reflects your versatility and creativity. Network with photographers, stylists, and other artists—it’s a collaborative industry. Most importantly, stay professional, humble, and open to learning. Trust takes time to build, but it’s everything when working with high-profile clients.
Bello: Where do you see your career heading in the future? Any exciting projects you can share?
Joanna: I’m focusing on expanding my work internationally, continuing to collaborate on editorials, and working with more iconic figures. I’m also exploring creative projects that merge my background in art with makeup, pushing the boundaries of what beauty can represent.
Bello: Lastly, what’s one thing you’d like people to know about your approach to makeup artistry?
Joanna: Makeup is more than just a look—it’s about storytelling and connection. Whether I’m working on a fashion editorial or with a celebrity client, my goal is to create something that feels impactful, authentic, and beautiful.
