Ariana Grande Is Joining the Focker Family, and She’s Ready to Turn It Upside Down

The pop superstar trades the Land of Oz for family chaos in Focker-in-Law, the next chapter of the beloved comedy franchise.

Ariana Grande is officially entering her comedy era again, and this time, she’s taking on one very intimidating family.

In Focker in Law, the upcoming fourth installment of the Meet the Parents franchise, Ariana stars as Olivia Jones, the girlfriend of Henry Focker, played by Skyler Gisondo. And if meeting your partner’s parents is already stressful, imagine having Robert De Niro as your potential grandfather-in-law.

The story brings audiences back to the world of Greg Focker (Ben Stiller), who now finds himself on the other side of the family interrogation. His son Henry is ready to take the next step with Olivia, but Greg isn’t exactly convinced she’s the right person for him. The problem? Everyone else seems to love her.

And Olivia is not your typical girlfriend. She’s a former FBI hostage negotiator, which means she’s more than prepared to handle an uncomfortable family dinner. In fact, the first trailer gives us a taste of her skills when Jack Byrnes (De Niro) puts her through his iconic lie detector test.

A New Kind of Ariana

After spending the last few years captivating audiences as Glinda in Wicked and Wicked: For Good, Ariana is stepping into a completely different character. Olivia is confident, sharp, and seemingly impossible to intimidate. It’s a role that gives Grande the opportunity to bring her comedic timing back to the big screen.

The trailer has already sparked conversation among fans, particularly because Ariana’s speaking voice sounds noticeably different from the higher register audiences became familiar with during her Glinda press appearances. For many viewers, it was a reminder of the voice and personality they remember from her earlier interviews and acting days.

But perhaps the most exciting part is seeing her share the screen with two comedy heavyweights. Robert De Niro praised Grande’s performance, calling her one of the funniest scene partners he has worked with. Ben Stiller has also spoken positively about her talent and professionalism.

Directed by John Hamburg, who co-wrote the previous three films, Focker-in-Law continues a comedy legacy that began with Meet the Parents in 2000. More than two decades later, the franchise is finding a new way to revisit its favorite theme: the wonderfully uncomfortable experience of letting someone new into the family.

For Ariana, the project is another opportunity to explore the balance between her music career and her love for acting. And after the success and visibility of Wicked, audiences will get to see her in a setting that allows her to lean into comedy again.
