Fashion photography has always been an interesting challenge for me. By its nature, it carries an expectation of a specific type of beauty which isn’t always naturally aligned with my own personal – and broader – definition of beauty. To me, beauty is timeless, or at least contained by ever-changing trends. Beauty can be either simple or eloquent, sometimes visual but always soulful. In contrast I feel like fashion/editorial/media beauty is very visual and subject to assumptions that can change at any time. I love finding ways to play fashion’s expectations of beauty against themselves. I feel we need to openly acknowledge that women have a long, difficult, and complicated relationship with beauty and this series is my exploration of that.
