Is there a look or outfit that has ever made you feel most like yourself?
Honestly, as much as I love dressing up I often feel most myself when I’m wearing my own clothes, these days a pair of baggy jeans, and a cut-off t-shirt that I made myself.
If Fire Island were a mood board, what would be on it?
Lots of speedos, images of guys with mustaches from the 1970’s and a lot of gender-bendy slut gear.
Is there a particular designer, collection or era of fashion that inspires you creatively?
These days it’s a lot of 90s grunge and vintage Betsy Johnson.
How does your style help you reclaim or redefine how others perceive your identity?
I love playing with a mix of the masculine and feminine. Pairing big baggy camo shorts with a sports bra. Always showing a little skin and making even the mundane a little sexy. I think there are a lot of perceptions out there about Asian men with regard to our masculinity and our sex appeal, and I love playing within those expectations and subverting them.
Whose style has influenced you most?
The cast of Boy Meets World.
You’ve brought a strong representation of your identity to the screen in Fire Island. How would you hope to see that same kind of representation evolve in the fashion world?
More subversion, more acknowledgement of existing stereotypes and playing within them.
How would you describe your everyday aesthetic versus your red-carpet persona?
I’m much more casual in my everyday aesthetic. Vintage, thrifted, loose, boy clothes. On the carpet it’s similar but blown up to the nth degree.

Between Loot, your stand-up specials, and film projects, you’re constantly moving between mediums. Does your style shift with each creative phase?
I think my strength is maintaining the same baseline style no matter what space I’m navigating.
You’re someone who is known for being confident. What’s one thing you do that makes you feel most empowered?
I am always making sure the fit is correct. Even if it’s something that’s loose fitting, you can’t just throw it on. It should drape. It should frame. It should highlight all the things about yourself you like.
